Chapter Twenty-Seven

BACK INSIDE, BEKA was pleasantly surprised to find a fire roaring in the study's hearth. In front of it, a table with two wingbacks had been arranged, with a drinks trolley full of crystal decanters rolled up next to it.

Removing her velvet wrap, she tossed it on the sofa enroute to pour herself a brandy. The black satin of her dress made a pleasant sound as she walked across the room.

Lifting the top off one of the crystal decanters, Beka poured herself a generous snifter. Its amber color matched her cat's eyes perfectly.

"Would you like one?" she asked, looking at Kai over her shoulder.

He was still standing at the door, unable to move.

The sight of Beka in free flowing silk going swish...swish-swish held him captivated. Her naked back, or should he say, her overall near nakedness, had his blood pounding in places he'd preferred starved of such a rush.

"I'll have cognac," he answered through gritted teeth.

Beka smiled at the slight strain in his voice. "Your wish is my command."

Looking to the heavens, Kai inwardly sighed. If only.

Filling his glass with a fair few glugs, she picked it up and made a big show of leaning over the table to place it on his side. "So...have you made a decision yet?" she asked with a sly smile when she noticed where his gaze was riveted.

Jesus, did that slit in her dress have to ride so high up her thigh? The woman was a tactical genius. How the hell was he going to concentrate on winning when her breasts were one spaghetti strap away from being freed? Answer: not well.

Time to throw in his ante and raise the stakes.

"I'm still giving it some thought," he said, strolling over to join her while removing his suit jacket and tie.

Beka's nostrils flared at the sight.

Kai smiled. Ah memories, sweet memories.

Stopping by the sofa where she'd tossed her wrap with a devil may care kinda flair, he took his time neatly placing his discarded clothing on its leather arm.

Beka arched a brow at his none too subtle messaging.

He said nothing and continued towards her, happily leaving them on display as a gentle reminder. The top buttons of his dress shirt soon popped open as well. She found herself rather liking Kai's relaxed look.

A lot.

Was it getting hot? Her skin felt like it was on fire and it had nothing to do with the one in the hearth.

Taking a seat, Kai gestured for Beka to take hers. She appeared to be frozen in place for some reason. "Please, sit. I'd say Maria's made the choice for us," he remarked.

"What?" she asked, totally distracted by Kai’s insanely hot sex appeal.

"The game we will play to win our Truth or Dare wager. Take a closer look at the table, sweetheart."

It's top was made of inlaid black and white marble squares.

"Chess?" she asked. "Yes, I played a few times as a child and have a sound understanding of the basics." More like she'd played a few thousand times. Rainy days on a dig with her parents had to be whiled away somehow.
